Trusting God

Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.” Mark 6:7-10

I don’t know about you, but if someone sent me out with these instructions, there would be more than just fear rising in me. I would have a lot of questions, but I would probably feel anxious and apprehensive too. But the twelve disciples just went... Talk about faith and trust!

There have been many times in my life that I wondered exactly how God would provide financial help. In those type of moments, I usually pray something like this, “Lord, I don’t know how, but somehow... God, I leave it up to you.” When we surrender our worries to The Lord, He provides. In my case, His provision isn't usually money. It may be a meal from a close friend, or He might send someone to drive my teen which helps me save money for groceries. But in all cases, He provided!

If we look at those verses from Mark 6 carefully, we can see an entirely different viewpoint. God must have prompted other people to give those disciples Jesus sent food, supplies, money, and clothing. Other people must have blessed them with a free place to spend the night. Whoever provided for the twelve were additionally blessed as they witnessed spiritual and physical healings firsthand!

The life of a Christ follower can often be divided into two "seasons" or phases. We'll have seasons of being blessed (receiving a blessing) and seasons of being the person who blesses others (giving a blessing). Both of those situations require us to completely trust God. Scripture tells us over and over to trust God. For example, read the verses below, to learn where we should, and where we shouldn't put our trust.

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 1 Timothy 6:17-18 (NLT)
