These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.' John 16:33 (NKJV)
These words from Jesus bring us much comfort, IF we'll let them. All too often, we focus on the “tribulation” instead of the “good cheer”, knowing He overcame the world, but not trusting Him to overcome our problems. When life gets tough; when trials and unresolved issues abound; when we're physically, emotionally and spiritually weak; when we experience loss of control we just thought we had, we must focus on what we know about God:
- He loves us, and He has a perfect plan for us. (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
- He is faithful. (Hebrews 13:8)
- He is working out all things for our good. (Romans 8:28)
Therefore, we must trust His process. In His omniscient goodness, Almighty God has “made room” for everything that happens to us: the good, bad, lovely, ugly, peaceful, anxious, pleasant, and uncomfortable. Nothing is wasted in our lives, and nothing can subvert God's perfect plan!
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
Christ follower, grasp the reality of this verse! The more you know the Word, the more you know God. The more you know God, the more you trust God! Spend time reading and meditating on scripture each day. Fortify yourself with God's promises, they will comfort you in times of uncertainty. Years ago, I was facing major surgery, and I was very nervous. Well-meaning friends couldn't relieve my anxiety, but several scriptures brought me peace and comfort. I had typed them on a piece of paper so when I needed to read them, they were all in one place. I stilled myself as I read (Psalm 46:10), and these verses were like God whispering His peace over me. I have memorized many of these and I quote them out loud when I'm fearful. This isn't a “name it and claim it” mentality, it's seeking God's grace as we ask Him to empower and increase our faith.
When the enemy tempts you to give up, don't surrender to him, surrender yourself to God! Cast your cares on the one who loves you. (I Peter 5:7). Remember, trials aren't designed to defeat us, they are meant to draw us closer to God.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8 (NKJV)
When it's hard to understand what God is doing, don't lose hope. God's Word says His purposes are much higher than our human minds can comprehend (Isaiah 55:8-9). When you can't see His purpose, trust His process!
