‘Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I, Send me!”’ Isaiah 6:8
The prophet Isaiah experienced a powerful vision of being physically present with God. In that vision he became aware of his "unclean lips" which symbolized his sin. Then, an angel took a burning coal from the altar, touched it to his lips, and purified him. After he was cleansed, Isaiah heard God ask, “Who will go for us?” Isaiah responded to the Lord's call by answering, “Send me!” This visionary encounter marked the beginning of Isaiah's ministry. It was the moment God commissioned Isaiah to be His spokesperson to the nation of Israel.
That burning coal symbolizes God’s purifying grace. God must burn away our imperfections to prepare us for His commission, so purification and sanctification are necessary parts of our faith journey. They are also a vital to God’s plan and purpose for our lives. God doesn't call and commission everyone to overseas mission work, but He does call each of us to the mission field near our homes. But before we answer His call, we must “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness...” Matthew 6:33
Like Isaiah, when we're in the Almighty’s presence and awed by His greatness, we become aware of our sin and our inadequacy. At times, it can be challenging to keep our minds focused on God. But He's called us to do it, so He'll make it possible through Christ’s strength. But remember, being "on mission" for God is impossible if we aren't remaining in God's presence. “He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:4-5
God calls Christ followers to be the hands, feet, and voice of Jesus. One way He does that is by commissioning us to tell the world about His mercy and love. But God doesn't just ask us to comfort the world, He also asks us to confront the world with His gospel. There will be many who won’t listen, but don’t give up! Instead, be encouraged, God will use you and your gifts to help preserve some of His people.
When we encounter God, it changes us. Then, He will use us to change others. God is calling! When He commissions us for ministry, like Isaiah, respond by telling Him, “Here I am Lord, send me!”
