How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! Psalm 133:1
I was amused as I watched two young brothers play on opposing soccer teams. I wasn't much of a sports fan; I was just curious how their rivalry would work out. Their arguing and trying to outdo each eventually affected the entire family. Before long, those brothers were rarely on the "same page" about anything... even when it had nothing to do with sports. Their arguing reminded me of Jesus' words in Matthew; Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. Matthew 12:25
In 2 Corinthians 2:11, Christ Followers are told not to be ignorant of Satan's schemes. One of his many schemes is causing division among Christ followers. God wants the body of Christ to be of one accord, and recognizing what Satan is trying to do helps us avoid church conflict. Obtaining the abundant life Jesus promised means living in Christian unity. God's Word is our gold standard, and it's our best resource to resolve conflict. When we're humble (1 Peter 5:6) and treat others with respect, it honors God and promotes unity.
"I am in them, and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me." John 17:23 (NLT)
Is Jesus at the center of all we do? Are we following His footsteps and becoming more like Him? The church is the body of Christ- and we are the church! God didn't tell Christians to be independent of the church, He wants us to fellowship with other believers at church, in unity. We are made up of many parts, but we are all one in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12). Christ is the Head of the Church and has authority over all things, including our conflict. Christ follower, surrender all your conflict to Jesus!
Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. Ephesians 4:3-4 (NLT)
If resolving conflict and remaining unified seems difficult, ask the Holy Spirit to help you by giving you His peace!
