It is Finished

Suffering alone in the Garden of Gethsemane,

Pondering on the prophesies of His destiny.

Willing to endure a gruesome crucifixion path,

Along with the full force of His Father’s wrath.

Staggering beneath anguish and sorrow,

Facing abandonment from His Father.

Heavily troubled, “not My will.” He said,

“Yours be done”, The Spirit of obedience led.

Out of lovingkindness, God sent His Son,

Knowing there would be great separation.

To pay our debt, Jesus became our sin,

No greater love exists and never will again.

The flogging and the whipping, heard from afar,

Were the beginning of His bruises and many a scar.

The thorny crown pressed down upon His head,

Our precious Jesus’ face, covered in scarlet red.

His hands, His feet, His aches, and pains,

His sweat, His tears, His blood all drained.

Staggering beneath the crossbeam He bore,

Seeing the people’s rejection, His heart it tore.

The heaviness of the cross, He so felt the weight,

It wasn’t the hewn wood, but our sin so great.

His steps got heavier and harder to bear,

Carrying all humanity’s sins, not one He’d spare.

In pain, He lifted His head towards Calvary’s hill,

Exchanging perfection for punishment, still.

Stumbling down a path, hostile crowds up ahead,

Escorted by soldiers, God Almighty they led.

At Calvary, the heavy cross was placed on Him,

He was forced to lay upon it like a criminal full of sin.

His heavily beaten body was lined up for crucifixion,

The cross was His purpose, His earthly mission.

Sounds of nails driven into hands and feet,

Resounded from Calvary down the city street.

Saying “Father, forgive them,” His Father He sought,

What they were doing, His executioners knew not.

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” He cried,

Our King and our Savior, for us He was ready to die.

He took one last breath as His human life diminished,

Then He gave us His all, and cried out, “It is finished.”
