Plugging In

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. Acts 4:31

My daughter and I attended a dance conference last weekend. It is the highlight of her year because she can come together with fellow Christians and learn more about dance while praising and worshiping Jesus. It's an amazingly sweet time of reconnecting for us, especially during this busy holiday season. The focus of the conference was “Surge.” To surge means to increase suddenly and strongly, or to move quickly and powerfully.

In the dance world that makes perfect sense, but believers can also surge in the power of the Holy Spirit. After Jesus died, the disciples were told to wait in the upper room. They anxiously waited for the gift Jesus promised they would receive. When the gift of The Holy Spirit came upon them, they were transformed. Power surged through them, power they had never experienced before.

The leader of the dance conference gave us a great analogy. She held up her cell phone and said, "This is just a phone." It can call people, send texts, and take photos, but over time the battery will decrease. Eventually, it will no longer work or be effective. But plugging it into a power source recharges the battery and it becomes useful once again." As Christians, we are a lot like that phone. Life runs our spiritual batteries down, but when we are plugged into the Holy Spirit, we surge! He recharges us, making us alive and active, filled by the power of the Holy Spirit.

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.Acts 1:8

Are you feeling tired and drained? Is your spiritual battery depleted? Then it's time to reach up toward heaven and say: Holy Spirit, I'm plugging back in. Fill me with power so I can so I can surge forward in strength of The Lord!
