The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:10-12
During the holidays, we mainly see Jesus portrayed as a baby in a manger, but that image shouldn't be our only impression. As a schoolteacher, one Christmas I asked my fourth graders to write down why Jesus was born. Here are some of their answers:
- Jesus came because He loves us.
- Jesus came to die for our sins.
- Jesus came to live in our hearts.
- Jesus came so we could learn how to love God.
- Jesus came to lead us back home, to heaven.
The Christ child in a manger is a beautiful scene at Christmas, but the good news the angel proclaimed goes much deeper than Jesus’ birth. Christ Follower, don't limit the story of Jesus to His birth! The greatest story ever told includes His life, death, burial, and resurrection!
This message of God taking on flesh and dwelling among us (John 1:1-15) brings us great joy, and those fifteen verses summarize the prophecies and promises that paved the way for our redemption. Our Savior’s birth was the launching point of the grand story of Jesus' triumph on the cross. The Messiah's birth brought great hope to His generation, and to every generation that followed.
"...surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20
The Christmas season is about rejoicing and praising our Savior. He was born in humble surroundings, proclaimed by angels, led others by serving them, saved us in humility, and now reigns with Heavenly power!
