...man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Deuteronomy 8:3

Many of us like to refer to our quiet time in God's Word as being fed, but it's an analogy we get from scripture. It's found in Deuteronomy 8, but Jesus also rebuked Satan with that verse when He was being tempted. Managing our time can be a difficult, but God gives everyone the same 24 hours each day. He also gives us the freedom to choose how we'll use those 24 hours.

My grandmother always told me that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. She said no matter how busy I got; I shouldn't skip it or lessen its importance. As Christ followers, we should view our quiet time with God as our spiritual breakfast each morning. Putting God first and "eating" His Word feeds our spirit and nourishes our strength.

The moment we wake up a new spiritual battle begins. That quiet, sacred time we've planned to spend with God becomes a target for Satan, something he desperately wants to steal. Satan favorite method is distractions, and he will use anything and everything to divert our attention away from God. Christ follower, Satan wants to steal your spiritual breakfast and substitute an empty plate in its place!

Ways to ensure we don't miss (spiritual) breakfast:

  1. Find a place that is quiet, then find a time that is quiet. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35

  1. Find a Bible translation that is comfortable to read and easy to understand. Consider using a bible app on your phone. Some Bible apps have an audio button so you can listen as you read. Listening to the Word may keep you from getting distracted. "...faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

  1. As much as possible, avoid skipping your quiet time; Satan doesn't just love to distract us, He will also make hard to get back to our daily routine. Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him. 1 Chronicles 16:11 (NLT)

Start your day by having a quiet time with God. Let His Word nourish you each morning, then praise Him for His goodness. Finally, place your needs before Him, and ask Him to help you navigate your day!
