For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Truly understanding Christmas is a pivotal point in the life of a Christ Follower. Christmas isn't just a season, it's a reminder of how Christmas must be tied to Christ, Christian history, and our personal Christian journey. It reminds me of a daughter who asked her dad, “How will I know when I am really in love?” Her Father’s response was, “When it all makes sense.” In a way, this is also how we know when we are truly in love with the Lord; spiritual things will start to make sense.
The Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s Word, especially when we need it most. As I read Isaiah 9:6, I was overcome by the simple phrase: “…to us a Son is given…” The word “Son” highlights the Messiah's divine nature, connecting Him to the promises throughout scripture. The word “given” highlights God's grace and generosity. He gave us His Son as the ultimate gift, bringing salvation to humanity. God freely offered His gift to all, a gift we didn't deserve and one we can't earn.
Isaiah 9:6 tells us what was given when Christ was born:
• Wonderful: miraculous and awe-inspiring, beyond human comprehension.
• Counsellor: having divine wisdom and the provider of perfect guidance.
• Mighty God: the power and sovereignty of the Messiah, even over death.
• Everlasting Father: His eternal presence, and His loving, fatherly care for us.
• Prince of Peace: bringing peace to the world and reconciling us with God the Father.
Every page of God’s Word points towards our Messiah. Jesus is God's greatest gift, given to help us navigate through life. He is our Savior, Redeemer, King, Advocate, Shepherd, Friend, Deliverer, Provider, Healer, Comforter and King. He brings us Joy, Hope, and so much more. Without Jesus, we would still be lost...
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
This Christmas season, make sure you remember what was given to you in Christ Jesus. Worship the Lord! Love what He did and who He is. The more we understand Him, the more devoted we will be to Him.
