Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalms 119:105
Have you ever walked around in a very dark place without any illumination? If you have ever returned to a campsite in the wilderness at night without a flashlight, it can be downright scary. Without light, your other senses seem to heighten as they try to compensate for the darkness. Sounds may seem amplified at night, but you will still stumble over the obstacles in your path. But walking that same trail in daylight is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. In darkness, it's easy for anxiety to reign supreme.
You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. 2 Samuel 22:29
Few want to walk in darkness, because without light we will inevitably stumble and fall. Without light, it's easy to get lost because we cannot see a safe path to take. Even when you walk in the dark with others, they are just as lost as you are... Therefore, "staying together" in the darkness will provide minimal help in finding the right path.
Christ followers have been given a light to lead us through spiritual darkness, and His name is Jesus. We have two additional sources of light to guide us down the path of life: God's Word and the Holy Spirit. As we navigate through life, we will occasionally take a wrong turn, but God's light will always guide us back to the proper path. Unlike our flashlights, God’s light never dims or runs out of power!
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
The secular world is ever-changing, and its standards, morality, and so-called wisdom are always in flux. That creates a huge problem, because It's easy to get lost when the target is always shifting. In a way, God’s Word is like the North Star because they are both necessary for navigation. Use God's Word to navigate life; it will never lead you down the wrong path. But we must all make a choice... Do we want to stumble around in the dark, seeking guidance from the world and the lost people in it? Or will we use the light of God's Word to guide us?
Remember to walk in God's light! If you aren't sure how, just "turn on" His light by opening His Word!
