For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

Recently, a large thunderstorm passed directly over my house. The wind was howling, the night sky lit up, and thunder loudly cracked all around my home. The thunder was so loud, it rattled the windows and shook the entire house. In the middle of that storm, it was interesting to observe the very different reactions of my two cats. Their circumstances were identical, but the way they reacted to them differed greatly. My black cat totally freaked out and ran underneath my bed to hide. He was terrified, and there was nothing I could do to calm his frazzled nerves. My other cat reacted to that same storm in a completely different way. She remained calm through the entire storm, and just laid in my lap, totally at ease.

As I pondered why my cats reacted so differently, I realized that the cat that scrambled under the bed in terror was reacting to his circumstances. His behavior during the storm was based on what he could see and hear. My other cat saw and heard the same storm, but she remained on my lap the whole time. I realized she was taking her cues from my reaction, because she had total trust and faith in me. She knew that I was not concerned, therefore she wasn't concerned either. It allowed her to have peace in the middle of a very loud storm.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV)

So, how do we react to the storms that blow through our lives? Do we panic because we're walking by sight? Or are we peacefully riding out those storms? Navigating a storm peacefully requires having faith and completely trusting Jesus.

My calico cat was at peace because she had faith I would protect her. In her mind, I was able to keep her safe, so the howling winds and cracking thunder didn't phase her. She believed she was safe as long as she stayed close to me. That moment paints a picture of how we should ride out the storms in our lives. We know Jesus is our real protector, so if we'll stay close to Him, we'll be safe in life's storms.

Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. Matthew 8:26 (NLT)

Christ follower, find peace during life's storms by remaining close to the one who controls them!
