Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure. 1 John3:2-3 (NLT)
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the American Dream is the idea that the United States is a land of opportunity that allows upward mobility, freedom, and equality for people who work hard and have the will to succeed. (Britannica is how we researched things before we had Google.)
That definition of the American Dream is good, but over time, it has morphed into an ideology fueled by mankind’s greed, selfishness, and pride. Many people have unsustainable goals for a bigger house, better car, fancier clothes, and higher-paying jobs. But the pursuit of these things may injure their health, families, and finances. You can almost imagine Satan whispering in their ears "You deserve a better future; you deserve to have even more..." But the lust for more and more things leaves us spiritually empty and financially depleted. A study by Purdue University in 2018 found the richer we get, the less happy we become! And adults aren't the only ones who are impacted by this phenomenon. Research shows that children who come from affluent families are much more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and substance abuse than those who are less affluent.
The Bible tells us the way to have a full, rewarding, abundant life is by having a personal relationship with Jesus, staying in God's Word, and obeying His commands. “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” Luke 11:28
The Lord is fully aware of all our needs. He promises to provide for us, but we must do our part. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
If you've fallen into the trap of wanting more, ask God to restore your joy and contentment by helping you change the focus of your mind. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2
The world's ways and the world's things will never fill the void in our hearts, that is a space meant only for God. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
