Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Ephesians 5-6
We've all been the victim of deception. Maybe you bought a product with an expectation of what it would do, only to find out later it didn't deliver what was advertised. Deception can lead to disappointment, anger, and we may even feel embarrassed by allowing ourselves to be deceived. For some, the results are much more devastating—affecting their finances, health, and relationships with others.
The Bible is full of warnings about spiritual deception, and it can even have eternally fatal results. Jesus warned us in end times, false messiahs will even deceive the elect. We know Satan is committed to deceiving everyone, including believers... Christ follower, this means you! But it's important to remember that deception isn't always obvious…that’s why it is called deception. God's Word says Satan masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14) and he is the master of deception. The strongest Christ follower is not immune to Satan's attempts, recognizing this (and his tactics) is the first step in defeating deception.
FOUR WAYS Christ followers can discern deception:
• The Bible —The unfolding of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. (Psalm 119:130) God didn't just give us His Word, His Holy Spirit gives us the ability to understand it. Make time to read it daily!
• The Holy Spirit —“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26) The Holy Spirit teaches us truth and exposes deceit.
• A Bible teaching church and godly pastors —Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. (Acts 20:28) God commands pastors to nourish and protect His flock. It is vital that the church you attend teaches ALL of God's Word.
• Keep growing spiritually, be a DISCIPLE —Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32) Christianity isn't about getting saved and "coasting" into Heaven. Being a Christ Follower includes continuing to grow spiritually until we meet Jesus face-to-face!
These four things will help us recognize and reject deception. God has given us the warning, the Word, and the way out. He has given us a clear path to victory, but it's up to us to take it.
