Really God? This is the plan…

I'm a planner, like a "drive my family nuts at times" type of planner. I don’t like last minute things unless I plan for them. I know it sounds crazy, but that's just how I operate. Maybe you are the same, or maybe you're more of a "fly by-the-seat-of-your-pants" type of person. Regardless of how we navigate life, God loves to remind us that He is in control and He is sovereign.

In 1 Samuel 21:10-15, David was afraid of the king of Gath, so he pretended to be insane. This allowed him to escape, but he had nowhere to go. He ended up hiding in a cave alone, as he tried to sort things out with God and plan his next steps. Unbeknownst to David, God was already working on His plan, and was stirring the hearts of many people.

David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him. 1 Samuel 22:1-2

Think about it... You're at one of your lowest points, you're hiding in a cave and have no idea what to do next. Suddenly, you hear voices. But it's not just one person, it's 400 people, and you even hear the voices of your own family! David was probably shocked, but it's likely that he was questioning God’s plan. Really God? This is the plan? These men are not who I envisioned. They seem to be in distress, in debt, and filled with discontent. But these were the men God called, those who would obey and join David. Once David realized what God had been working on, I'm sure he was humbled and honored to become their commander. Like David, when our plans aren’t going the direction we want them to, we need to stop and say, Lord, have Your way. Take away my plans so I become less, and You become more.

You may not be alone in a cave, but what do you do in life's difficult moments? Do you have family members or friends who will gather around you? I truly hope so! But if you don't, I encourage you to get connected and reach out to find those people who will point you toward Jesus. Remember, God works in amazing ways! Continue to pray, continue to trust Him and know that He is working things out for you!

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore. Psalm 125:2
